Real-Life Math

Interior designers use math every day. They figure out the square footage of rooms and measure for fabrics, furniture and carpeting. Math is part of their workday.

You're helping a successful young couple design their living room -- the centerpiece of their home. The room is large. In fact, you think it may be too large. You recommend softening the look of the room by hanging large sconces of fabric from one wall, and using a moveable Oriental-style partition to shorten the room and make it more cosy. You tell your clients that the ideal living room has a total space of less than 150 square feet.

The room is 18 feet long and 12 feet wide. The wall where the fabric will go is 5 feet wide and 8 feet high.

Now you have a few math problems to solve. First, figure out the size of the room in square feet. Then figure out how much fabric you'll need to cover that harsh wall. And finally, make a recommendation for where to place the temporary wall.
