Real-Life Math

As a marine botanist, you are currently researching kelp farming. Kelp has many uses and can be sold to industry and to pharmaceutical companies. It can also be used as a food product for humans and for sea urchins and abalone.

The problem is that the naturally occurring beds of kelp in your area are not big enough to support this type of harvesting. Your research involves finding out how fast the kelp can be grown per 1 acre of water.

You have 1 ton of kelp. This plant grows very fast -- increasing in size at a rate of 3 percent per day.

How much kelp will you have in 30 days? (Hint: this is calculated using the same formula as banks and credit card companies use to calculate compound interest.)
