Real-Life Math -- Solution

Your research involves finding out how fast the kelp can be grown per 1 acre of water. Luckily, kelp grows very fast, increasing in size by 3 percent per day.

You have 1 ton of kelp in 1 acre. How much kelp will you have in 30 days?

To discover how much kelp you'll have after 30 days, figure out the formula for the first day.

On day 1, you'll have 1 ton x (1 + 0.03)
On day 2, you'll have (1 ton x 1.03) x 1.03
On day 3, you'll have (1 ton x 1.03 x 1.03) x 1.03

For 30 days, you'll have:

1 ton x 1.03 to the power of 30 = 2.43 tons of kelp

In 30 days, 2.43 tons of kelp can be grown in 1 acre of water.

"This plant grows very fast," says Louis Druehl. "When you are researching kelp farming, you have to know how much crop you will be able to harvest in a given period of time."
