Real-Life Math -- Solution

You're a massage therapist trying to figure out your hourly income. First, some multiplication and addition will give you your total income for the week:

30 one-hour visits x $65 per hour = $1,950
7 half-hour visits x $30 per half hour = $210
Total for the week = $2,160

Now figure out how much that is per hour, based on a full workweek:

$2,160 / 40 = $54 per hour

Finally, how many non-client hours did you work this week?

Client hours = 30 + (7 x 0.5)
Client hours = 30 + 3.5
Client hours = 33.5

Non-client hours = 40 - 33.5
Non-client hours = 6.5

Based on your numbers and the averages provided by the company, you're doing just fine.

Claude Gagnon is the immediate past-president of an association of massage therapist schools. "If you're running your own business, you better have math skills," he says.
