Real-Life Decision Making

You are an architect working for a firm. Your firm is beginning to get involved in sustainable building. But as consultants, you must make your clients happy. It is up to you to find solutions that will please your clients. One of the drawbacks to sustainable design is that it can be more expensive.

Sue Clark works for a consulting firm as a sustainability analyst and designer. She says that one of the challenges she faces is "making green design accessible -- and not something that you have to pay an extra 20 percent for -- so that you can convince more clients to build sustainably."

You are meeting with a client who wants you to design an office building. You talk to them about going green, but they turn you down because they think it will be too difficult, time-consuming and expensive.

You are committed to the idea of sustainable design. You want to make a difference for the environment. But you must follow the orders of your client. If you don't do what the client wants, they could find another firm to work with. However, you feel they're making a mistake by ignoring your green suggestions.
