Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You start over by collecting research in the field.

You decide to take a step back and figure out how to reliably measure and calculate the fuel use in drilling applications. Although this is not part of your plan, you know you'll need proof to sell your product. You have a brainstorming session with your team and you get a great idea. You'll look at other companies in other industries and see what they're doing in terms of metering technology.

"Thinking 'out of the box' is crucial to finding workable solutions for tough problems," says Craig Dunn. He is the president of WellDunn Consulting, a geological consulting firm.

You look at a Dutch tanker. It's a ship that carries liquids in bulk. You find out how they use fuel on a large scale. You look at the technology they use to calculate their fuel use. You are able to use this technology and apply it to your situation to solve your fuel calculation problem.

"Sometimes one solution causes another problem, which is what deters many people from changing their habits," says Dunn.
