Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a medical examiner trying to estimate the height of a deceased person based on some found bones that you have already determined to be those of a young man. One of the bones is a tibia (part of the lower leg) and its length is 37.65 centimeters.

Using the known formula for the proportion of the tibia length (T) to the height of a young man (h):

h = 2.392 x T + 81.688

h = 2.932 x 37.65 + 81.688

h = 192 centimeters

Use the formula for converting centimeters (cm) to inches (in):

cm x 0.3937 = in

192 x 0.3937 = 75.6 inches

75.6 inches = 6 feet and 3.6 inches

This means that the young man whose bones were found was just under 6 foot 4 in height.

"Mathematical acumen is important in order to secure enrollment into a medical school. It is also important in order to understand and interpret medical treatment, drug administration and test results," says Dr. Bonita Porter. She is a regional chief coroner.
