Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You rebuild the forms at a lower height and take more time to pour in the concrete.

This is the real-life decision made by Colin Lawson and his project team.

Although the chances that another freak windstorm would occur were small, they decided that the risk to the workers' safety wasn't worth taking a chance. They decided to rebuild the forms to half their original height.

"We made this decision because in construction, as in any human endeavor, there is nothing more important than human life," he says.

Once the forms were built, the workers poured in the concrete. Then they completed building the forms to their full height and poured in the rest of the concrete.

Although it took more time to complete the project, Lawson says it was worth it to ensure the construction crew's safety. "I would emphasize that you cannot make a mistake by basing problem-solving decisions on sound moral values," he says.
