Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a wildlife rehabilitator in an aquarium. You are trying to figure out how much antibiotic to give to a seal pup that has just been brought in.

First, you must convert the seal's weight to pounds.

Weight = 10 kilograms x 2.2 pounds per kilogram
Weight = 22 pounds

Dosage = 1.6 mg per pound x 22 pounds
Dosage = 35.2 mg

You must administer 35.2 milligrams of antibiotic twice a day.

"We use math daily to figure out medication dosages, to calculate nutritional requirements based on stomach capacity, when monitoring heart and respiratory rates for anesthesia and when figuring out formula ratios during baby seasons," says Carrie Hines, a wildlife rehabilitator. "We also use statistics a lot."
