Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You refuse to copy the image.

This is the real-life decision made by graphic designer Sherry Stinson. She has found herself in this position more than once. Usually, she makes every effort to come up with an original design that will appeal to the client. Unfortunately, that didn't work with Hobson.

While Hobson's business was important to her newly started firm, she would not violate someone else's copyright.

"I've had clients cut something out of a magazine and say, 'Use this' or give me someone else's brochure and say, 'Scan this.' Ethically and legally, both are wrong due to copyright laws."

Often, people just don't realize that it's wrong. "They think you can scan something and just alter it a little and it's OK. But it's not. It is still copyright infringement," says Stinson.

More often than not, people will change their minds once they understand that what they're proposing is illegal and unethical. Not always, though. Stinson lost the Hobson account, but her reputation remained intact and business picked up as clients were getting ready for their Christmas advertising.

Today, business is booming and she's thrilled when she sees her original designs in magazines or catalogs. "It's a very satisfying feeling."
