Real-Life Decision Making

It is spring at the ostrich ranch. The eggs that have been incubating under special heat lamps are beginning to show signs that they are ready to hatch.

The first egg cracks open and you are delighted to see a tiny ostrich chick peck its way out of the shell, and almost immediately open its mouth for feed. After a while, a second egg hatches and then a third. It is truly wonderful to watch.

But you are deeply concerned when the last egg hatches and the tiny chick that emerges struggles to leave its shell. When it does, it immediately falls over and can't rise.

"Sometimes you get birds that have badly deformed legs," says Warrington. "It is tough to see something like that and know what to do."

What do you do?
