Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You cull the bird from your herd.

This is the real-life decision that Steve Warrington, an exotic animal farmer in Illinois, would make in a similar situation.

"It is very sad to say that this is a business," he says. "What you decide to do for your herd is based on economics." It is expensive to try and cure a bird with deformed legs, and keep it in the herd.

In many cases, it is also unfair to the bird that must struggle to survive among other fit and often aggressive birds. "You can try to correct some of the problems, but the birds grow so big so fast, it's really cruel to leave a bird that can't stand up on its own legs," he says.
