Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Accept:

  • The wedding suit of the town's first mayor -- reflects community history, community contributions and commitment to family
  • The overalls of a local farmer from the same time period -- reflects community history, hard work and industry
  • An old piano used for many years by a local piano teacher -- reflects community history and cultural enrichment
  • A 19th-century fur pelt and a woven basket prepared by a native tribe of the region -- reflects community history, industry and cultural enrichment
  • A series of letters sent by a Second World War soldier to his family in the town -- reflects community history and connections to national historical events
  • An old shovel found buried at the entrance to the town mine -- reflects local industry
  • A manual plow used by early farmers from the region -- reflects local industry
  • A photograph of the town Christmas pageant from 1956 -- reflects commitment to community spirit and cultural enrichment

Decline:

  • A first-edition copy of Treasure Island, purchased at a local auction 10 years ago -- item is not specifically related to community history
  • A number of arrowheads, prehistoric -- museum does not have a prehistoric section, plus it is not clear whether the arrowheads are from the region
  • A series of photographs of soldiers going off to the Second World War -- not specifically community-oriented, although the photographs may be used to provide context for the Second World War letter sent home by a local soldier
  • A photograph of a celebrity who moved into the town two years ago -- no long-standing community history

Curator Philip Lambert says communication is important while presenting his research. "I give eco tours and talk to the public. I give slide shows and we've done some TV, so yeah, it helps. If you can write well, that's useful too," he says.
