Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You refuse the man's offer.

This is the real-life decision made by Lisa Paice, a chief museum curator.

You explain to the donor that it would not be ethical for you to accept his donation. The museum is responsible to the whole community. If you displayed his family exhibit in exchange for a financial donation, it would send the wrong message to the community.

"It was a really tough decision to make," says Paice. "But if I accepted the donation, it would have seemed like the museum was up for grabs -- like we were displaying the history of anyone who could afford to make a big donation.

"When I explained it, the man understood and said he hadn't thought of it that way. He said he appreciated my integrity and made a large donation anyway.

"The donation was about two-thirds of the original offer. We had to be really careful with our budget, but it was enough to keep the museum going that year."
