Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell your foreman you might need more paper.

This is the real-life decision made by printing machine operator Graham Pratt.

"For myself, over the years you learn that if you think you're going to be close, you get more," Pratt says, "or you let someone know."

In some cases, it's OK to print a few less than the order calls for. Some customers don't mind if sometimes they get a few more than they ordered and sometimes a few less. However, only the foreman should make this decision.

"Maybe they can say, 'yeah, it's not a big deal,'" Pratt says. "Some jobs, it doesn't matter."

For some jobs, however, the exact number does matter, like when a company is sending an annual report to each of their shareholders. In a case like that, "You've got to be right. You've got to be sure," Pratt says.
