Real-Life Math

Many greeting card designers are self-employed. Art might be the fun part of the job, but budgeting is an important part of any business.

"You have budgeting to see how well sales are doing with the cards, costs of the print runs, how much profit you're making on particular cards," says Heather Castles. She's an illustrator and graphic designer.

You're a freelance greeting card designer. You need to work out your budget. You licensed a design to a greeting card manufacturer. You received $400 for the design. You also receive five percent of the wholesale sales from the card. Your card wholesales at $1.50 per card. For the first six months your card was in production, 2,500 cards were sold each month from the wholesaler.

Including your design fee, how much have you made from this design in six months?.
