Real-Life Math

You are working on a cattle ranch. You are responsible for the care of the animals. That includes feeding, breeding, birthing, and fixing fences and barns. The cattle need salt and trace minerals to supplement their diet. You must make these available to your herd.

You have a herd of 853 cows. You rotate the herd through different pastures to make sure there is always enough grass for them. They have just been moved to a new pasture. They will stay in that pasture for 15 days. Each cow consumes 2 ounces (oz.) of salt and 1.5 oz. of minerals per day. Salt and minerals come in 18-pound bags. (Remember, there are 16 oz. in one pound.)

How many 18-pound bags of salt will you need for the herd to last 15 days?

How many 18-pound bags of minerals will you need for the same time?

"Math is used in the industry quite a bit. However, it is a much simpler math than what I have taken in college," says Clay Chihasz. He works on a ranch.
