Real-Life Communication -- Solution

As a farmer from a long line of farmers, you have inherited a lot of old machinery. You and your family have worked hard and always maintained the equipment. You read about hazards of old farm equipment. You want to make sure your machinery is safe to use.

These are your answers:

1. What models of hay balers pose a risk?

Models 54A, 54B, 58 and 62 made by New Holland in the 1970s. .

2. What can you do to make the hay baler less dangerous?

There is a retrofit guard from the manufacturer. The retrofit will fully cover the secondary driveline.

3. What are four things you can do to avoid injuries caused by the machinery?

Always shut down the machinery when not in use. Follow the manufacturer's safety manual. Inspect equipment regularly to make sure moving parts are guarded. Request that workers tie up long hair and cinch loose clothing.

4. Who should you tell about the hazards?

You should tell your family and workers on your farm about the potential dangers of the equipment and how to avoid them.
