There are no specific educational requirements to become a band chief or tribal leader. A commitment to and an interest in issues affecting the tribe are important.

"The education of leaders really varies, depending on the tribe," says Rebecca Donovan Johnston. She is a legislative associate at the National Congress of American Indians.

"Some leaders have doctorates and others haven't finished high school. What's important is experience and that these people are involved in the tribal issues."
