Additional Information

Preparing for a career as an ornithologist can be done in many different ways. Ron Rohrbaugh is the assistant director of education for the bird education program at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. He says few schools offer degrees in ornithology, and most future ornithologists wind up taking a degree in biology or ecology. He recommends pursuing a bachelor's degree in wildlife and fisheries science.

"Once I was at university and I could do what I wanted, I went off to graduate school at Berkeley to get my PhD, then got a one-year fellowship at the American Museum of Natural History," Rohrbaugh says.

"I then worked at Louisiana State University for nine years and I've been at Minnesota for four years," he says.

Research biologist Mary Hennen's advice is to get a minimum of a four-year college degree and then, ideally, to get a master's degree. You should also consider volunteering at a museum, zoo or nature center.
