Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Saying yes, no and I don't understand are all non-verbal communications we have grown up with. You show those by the way you nod your head or shrug your shoulders. You nod your head up and down for yes and from side to side for no. You shrug your shoulders to say that you don't understand.

Numbers are also common. You hold up three fingers. What are more complicated are the tools that a surgical technician would be asked for.

"In surgery, there are some common signals to indicate certain types of instruments the surgeon may need to use," says Ron Johnson.

"Making a scissors motion with two fingers indicates the surgeon wants a pair of scissors. Pushing your index and thumb together like a duckbill indicates the surgeon needs a pair of forceps. Rotating your wrist with your hand open means the surgeon needs a suture on a needle holder."

He says most of these are simple gestures that surgical techs learn with practice. "Of course, the really good surgical techs can anticipate what the surgeon needs without ever saying a word, and be able to have whatever the surgeon needs ready and available."
