Real-Life Math

You're heading off to compete in 3 rodeos on the coast this coming weekend. You'll be taking your pickup truck and horse trailer.

You want to figure out how much the 3-day trip will cost. You expect the following expenses:

  • One of the rodeos is on an island, so you'll have to pay for a ferry. The rate is $4 a foot. Your truck and trailer measure 37 feet in length. (Hint: you have to go both ways)
  • Fuel will cost about $300.
  • Entry fees for 2 of the rodeos are $82 per person. The 3rd rodeo costs $262 per person to enter.
  • Feed for your horse costs $2.50 a bale. You'll need 4 bales for your horse.
  • Meals will cost $30 a day.
  • Up to 2 people can sleep comfortably in your horse trailer, so you'll have no hotel expenses.
  1. How much is your trip going to cost?
  2. First place at the biggest of the 3 rodeos will earn you $4,800. If you won first place, how much of the prize money would you have left after expenses?
  3. If another rodeo performer travels with you to share costs, how much will the trip cost each of you?
