Real-Life Communication

You have been asked to speak to schoolchildren about your job.

What does a library technician do? Imagine your audience is a group of elementary-age students. Keep it brief -- 200 words or less.

For background, use the following information:

Library technicians play important roles on a library staff. They occupy positions between clerks and librarians.

  • Assisting students, teachers and administrators by answering routine reference questions and helping them locate material
  • Cataloging and processing new library materials
  • Ensuring resources are consistent with school library requirements
  • Maintaining library and circulation records such as overdue lists
  • Searching catalogs to determine the price and availability of materials
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of computer software and CD-ROMs
