Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could say:

Good morning boys and girls. My name is Jill Smith and I am the library technician here. I do a lot of different jobs here at the library. I'll tell you about some of them so that you know when to come to me with a question, OK?

My job title should give you a hint about what I do. As a technician, I deal with many of the technical aspects of library operation. For instance, I can show you how to use the CD-ROMs to find encyclopedia articles. And if something goes wrong with a film projector or a computer, I can usually fix it.

I also make sure that new books are entered into the computer catalogs. But not all of my job is technical. I also help make sure that new magazines, books and newspapers get to their proper places on the library shelves.

And I keep an eye open for new books and other materials from publishing companies to make sure our library has the most up-to-date information.

In short, I'm here to help. I help the librarians do their work more efficiently. And I can also help you. So if you have a question, just ask!

"Communication skills are very important.," says reference librarian Stephen Poppino. "Library techs work with other staff members in interrelated services, such as circulation, reference, and interlibrary loans. They also have to communicate clearly with their patrons about reference questions, how to use the library, and library policies."
