Real-Life Decision Making

It's show time! You've been preparing for this dressage competition for months, and are excited that the competition is about to begin. You braid your horse's mane, saddle and bridle it, and bring it out of the stall.

You put on your black riding jacket and check your appearance in the mirror. Everything looks great. You lead the horse forward. A teammate pokes his head around the corner and asks what's wrong with your horse.

Wrong? You lead the horse forward and notice that it is limping slightly. Maybe it's just a bit stiff from being in a stall all night. You lead the horse around a warm-up ring. The very slight limp doesn't seem to be getting better, but it isn't getting worse.

Can you ride in the competition? "You are dealing with animals, so you are the one who has to make the decision about whether to ride or not. The horse can't tell you what it's feeling," says Jack Polo, an equestrian.

What do you do?
