Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You have a curious boy watching as you clean his family's chimney. He asks you many questions about what you are doing and why you are doing it. These are the answers you give to some of his questions:

  1. How long of a brush do you need to clean the flue?

You need to add extensions to your brush until it reaches the full length of the chimney.

  2. Do you clean the flue from the roof or from down below?

You clean the flue from the top. You send the brush down as far as you can and scrub, rather than sending the brush up the chimney.

  3. How come you are using that big vacuum cleaner? How come you aren't using our vacuum cleaner?

You don't use a household vacuum cleaner because the ashes and soot will ruin the motor.

  4. How do you know if a stovepipe is clean?

A good way to know if a stovepipe is clean is to dismantle and inspect the pipe with a flashlight.
