Real-Life Math -- Solution

Your apprentice is having trouble writing up invoices. Take the information she has written down and figure out how many cleanings she did at each price. You also need to figure out how much tax she charged on the total bill of $855.

  1. Bertha cleaned 10 chimneys. She did a majority of thorough cleanings for $90. But she says she remembers doing a few minor cleanings for $75. She was paid $855 in total for the work. How many $90 cleanings did she do?

    Number of cleanings = 10. She only did a few at $75.

    Let X = the number of jobs at $90
    And (10 - X) = the number of jobs at $75

    Then 90X + 75(10 - X) = $855

    90X + 750 - 75X = $855
    90X - 75X = $105
    15X = 105
    X = 7

    Therefore, Bertha did 7 jobs at $90 and 3 jobs at $75.

  2. Calculate the tax on $855.

    Tax = 7 percent or 0.07
    $855 x 0.07 = $59.85

    Bertha should have collected $59.85 worth of tax on the chimney cleanings.

"For the most part, we use math to total up bills," says Skujins. "It's basic arithmetic."
