Real-Life Math

You work with patients with back problems. But you're also a small businessperson, responsible for everything from ordering paper clips to deciding how many patients to see each day.

Your new practice is growing quickly. When you started out, you saw five patients a day. This gave you plenty of time to catch up on paperwork, help answer phone calls, and fill out forms.

But now, more patients come through the door each day. Demand is growing to the point where more patients need to be scheduled. Your front desk nurse wants to know how many you can fit in a day. Here's what you know:

  • Your office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. You close from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch, and want to leave enough time for 15-minute breaks before and after lunch
  • Treatments range from 15 to 40 minutes
  • Each patient spends another 10 minutes filling out forms and preparing for treatment
  • You want to leave at least 30 minutes a day for hospital consultations and unscheduled patients

How many patients can you comfortably see tomorrow?
