Real-Life Decision Making

There is one spot left in the library sciences program at your university.

There are two people in the running for the last spot -- Kathy Kelp and Lazarus Jones. Both are solid candidates. Both of them would have been easily admitted into the program had there been more spots open.

Here are Kelp and Jones's grade-point averages: 3.75 and 2.55 out of 4.0 respectively. Kelp has the clear edge there. In volunteer work and experience relevant to the program, Kelp again has the edge. She has worked part time for almost two years at the local literacy center.

Here's the catch: for the past few years, your university has been under severe financial strain. At several points in the previous fiscal year, the institution faced the very real possibility of going bankrupt.

Jones' father happens to run the bank that your school deals with. Yesterday he told you he would make it worth your while if you let his son into the program.
