Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You try to convince the director that the scenes must be changed.

This is the real-life decision that dramaturg Denis Johnston would make. "It all depends on the overall effectiveness of the change," he says. "If it will make a change for the better, you should try to go ahead with it."

In this case, because scenes are being rearranged, there shouldn't be too much extra work for the actors or set workers. You quickly rewrite a few lines to make the scenes flow better, and give them to the director.

Once he sees that the changes are minor, he goes along with your decision. "Sometimes a whole play can be changed for the better just by reversing a scene," says Johnston. "A dramaturg should feel that they can suggest something like this, if it helps the play."
