You estimate what the timber in that area will be, based on your previous scaling that day.

You have the experience to make an educated guess. Maybe you'll come pretty close. Then again, there may be as few as six or seven trees in that stand that could make logging the entire area worthwhile. After all, a single veneer-grade oak could be worth several hundred dollars.

There are times for estimates and times for doing the count. When you really aren't sure, you should count it.
