You draft a note to your superior, saying you failed to sample the area but could provide an estimate if necessary.

Your superior says he appreciates your honesty, but that the stand is important and needs to be counted accurately. He sends you back the next day to do the work over again.

If you're asked to count a stand, that means something specific. Your boss won't appreciate a general estimate. In other words, anyone can make an estimate. Your job is to scale the timber.
