Real-Life Math

An oil company has just called your company, Smart Root Consulting. They ask you the cost of cleaning up an oil spill using phytoremediation. They've heard it is cheaper than traditional cleanup methods.

Now you need to write a proposal. In it, you'll show how much you'll charge for the cleanup. You'll also show how much cheaper your method is than others are.

The spill covers an area that is 50 feet by 120 feet. Half of it has leaked 1 foot into the ground. The other half has leached 2 feet into the ground.

The traditional way to clean up a spill is to dig the whole thing up and transport it to a hazardous materials landfill. This would cost $120 a cubic foot.

Your phytoremediation method costs only $30 a cubic foot.

For your proposal, you need to figure out the following:

  • What is the total surface area of the spill?
  • How much of the ground is contaminated, in cubic feet?
  • How much would a traditional cleanup cost?
  • How much will your method cost?
