Real-Life Decision Making

Lexicographers make thousands of decisions in the course of their work. For every word in most abridged dictionaries, there are many more that don't make the cut. Each decision is based on experience, education and gut instincts.

You are a lexicographer. You are the proofreader of the pre-publication galleys for a new English dictionary. Galleys show exactly what a book will look like when published.

You had a week to proofread the galleys. You methodically worked your way through the first 150 pages, making minor corrections as you saw problems.

It's time for the dictionary to go to print. But now you notice an error. The word "xylophone" is listed in the dictionary under Z, as in "zylophone." The mistake escaped your first read.

Bringing the problem to the attention of your superiors will highlight your own error.

What do you do?
