Real-Life Communication

In music television, the medium is the message. As an essential part of the package, VJs must be excellent communicators who can think on their feet and talk until they drop. "Definitely, you need communication skills," says VJ Chris Booker. "The biggest decision is what you're going to say and how you're going to say it."

You're a VJ at a 24-hour cable music station. Interviewing artists is one of your strengths. Luckily for you, a legendary rock star will be dropping by the studio on your shift for a live 15-minute chat to promote his latest record. You estimate that you will have time to ask at least three probing questions. Since your time will be limited, you decide to prepare them in advance.

Here's the lowdown on the star:

  • He's in his early 50s and happily married to his second wife. They just had a daughter.
  • Back in the 1970s, he released a series of groundbreaking records, which critics say inspired the punk movement. Many artists have covered his songs.
  • His last few records have been commercial and critical flops. He's touchy about discussing his failures.
  • After a wild rock 'n' roll lifestyle, including many years of drug addiction, he recently became a devout Christian. Many of the songs on the record speak of his new direction in life, and reports suggest that he loves to talk about his new religion.

What questions can you come up with that will coax the most interesting answers from your guest?
