Real-Life Decision Making

The stationary engineer works on non-moving machinery. This includes heating and cooling systems, diesel engines and boilers. It's up to you to decide what should be done in cases where equipment is acting up.

The furnace at Grand Hill Elementary School is acting up. According to the school's head custodian, it has been making a strange grinding and rattling noise for the past week or two. "It gets so loud down here sometimes," he says, "that we have to send the kids outside for break because they sure as heck can't hear what the teacher is saying. Everybody's just too darn distracted."

You and the custodian go down into the furnace room. "Gee whiz," you say to him. "This is quite the old furnace, isn't it? I'd say it's a Spiers model 10, put in about 20 years ago."

Maybe Grand Hill Elementary needs a new furnace. That would certainly put an end to all of this noisy furnace business. On the other hand, you don't want to put the school through such a huge expense if it's not necessary. Maybe you should re-examine the furnace and make a final decision.

Unfortunately, you are pressed for time today. If you re-examine the furnace, you'll have to cancel your next appointment.
