Imagine you are a physical therapist. Your newest patient is a 16-year-old girl named Tina Jerr. She has lost strength in her grip and her hands tingle when she works.

Tina tells you she first noticed these sensations while working at her part-time job as a cashier. After some tests you determine that she has carpal tunnel syndrome (an inflammation of the tendons in the wrist).

You suggest massage therapy and rest to the young woman. Tina tells you she has a huge midterm exam coming up and can't rest her hand. It hurts her to use it, but she's very concerned about missing her test.

Tina asks if you will write a letter to her teacher asking that she be given an oral exam or have the test postponed.

Using the information below, write the letter.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by irritation of the median nerve at the wrist, which leads to an inflammation of the tendons. Symptoms can include tingling in the fingers or hand, as well as numbness, pain and swelling. It can be caused by anything that puts pressure on the median nerve, and often starts with long hours of keyboard typing. It is often said it is caused by repetitive motion.

If untreated, this disease can lead to a decrease in grip strength, wasting of the hand muscles and severe pain. Carpal tunnel syndrome can turn into a permanent problem. Treatment depends on the person -- massage therapy, rest, medication, ice and sometimes surgery are used.
