Real-Life Math

Whether they work at community clinics or large hospitals, physical therapists see a large number of patients each week. Part of the job involves keeping accurate records.

Daily records include a breakdown of the time spent with each patient and the particular activities performed with them. Tracking time involves the use of basic math skills.

Imagine you are working as a physical therapist. Today you worked a nine-hour day at the hospital.

You took one hour for lunch. You didn't keep track of how many clients you saw throughout the day, but you do know each appointment was 45 minutes long.

Each visit included a 10-minute consultation and 10 minutes of ultrasound, with the rest of the time spent doing exercises.

At the end of the workday, you have to write a report about what you've done.

Figure out how many patients you will see each day on this schedule, and how much time is spent doing exercises.

You want a whole number for this answer, so if you get a number that includes a fraction, think about applying it to lost time during the day -- you can't be 100 percent efficient!
