Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Answering a relatively simple question from a student can be awfully complicated.

"You have to decide what is the best way to answer," says Jonathan Bird. "For example, what if a student asks a really clever question? The way I answer may just confuse people more."

Bird got lots of experience answering student queries when he hosted a television show for the Massachusetts Corporation for Educational Telecommunications (MCET). Each episode included a question and answer segment.

"You have to give the most succinct answer that is correct," he says.

In this case you avoid the topic of natural selection altogether. Instead, you concentrate on the points that the children can understand:

Each colony of sea anemones is made up of both breeders and fighters. Individual anemones have different fighting styles. Some, like Rambo, can't wait to strike the first blow. Others behave more like karate black belt Bruce Lee, always waiting until they are hit before striking back.
