Dwayne Ellis is the president of a digital rendering and design company. He says math skills are more important for some 3D design jobs than others.

"This really depends on the type of 3D job one is going after," says Ellis. "If the student is pursuing a job as a digital sculptor, math isn't really an issue."

Digital sculpting involves using software to shape an object as if it were made of something soft such as clay. You just click on the tools to reshape the object, with the computer doing all the underlying calculations.

Math is still a valuable skill for a 3D render-designer to have, however. "Most facets of 3D involve some form of math, so in my opinion it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it," says Ellis.
