Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You treat him, but urge him to go to the emergency room right away.

You give Ron his regular treatment, making sure to ask how he has been feeling since his last visit. You tell him you are worried that he might have pneumonia, and suggest that he go to the emergency room to be diagnosed.

He looks frightened. "Is it that serious?" he asks. "Couldn't I just go and see my regular doctor, who knows me?" You tell Ron that's an even better idea.

You think to yourself that it was a good thing you didn't overreact and call 9-1-1! There was no sense in upsetting the patient, given his medical condition.

"With these symptoms, I would suspect pneumonia," says acupuncturist Heidi Mo Hawkins. "That's a frequent killer of people with AIDS."
