Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You treat him, but urge him to go to his doctor as soon as possible.

You treat Ron with acupuncture to help boost his immune system. You tell him you are worried he may have pneumonia and then suggest he call his doctor right away.

This is the real-life decision made by acupuncturist Heidi Mo Hawkins.

"With these symptoms, I would suspect pneumonia," she says. "That's a frequent killer of people with AIDS."

It's important that the patient get all the proper care he needs, she adds. The person's regular doctor, who is familiar with the patient's medical history, is the best person to help in this case.

And given the seriousness of the case, you couldn't just tell him to go home to rest, or worse, not mention your concerns at all.
