Real-Life Math

The annual expenses for your synagogue total $930,000. For the coming year, you expect to raise only $800,000. About $450,000 of this will be from dues (the money people pay to join the synagogue). Another $350,000 of it will be earned with fund-raising.

Somehow, you need to raise some extra money. Along with the leadership of the congregation, you need to work out a plan.

  1. By what percentage would you need to raise dues to meet your budget?
  2. By what percentage would you need to increase fund-raising to meet your budget?
  3. If you raised dues by 10 percent, how many more dollars would you need from fund-raising?
