Real-Life Math -- Solution

Remember, there are 50 bunches of grapes in each box and you sampled 10 boxes. First, determine the total number of bunches inspected.

Bunches inspected = boxes x bunches per box
Bunches inspected = 10 x 50
Bunches inspected = 500

Determine the percentage of grapes that don't meet color requirements.

Color defect = 15 bunches / 500 bunches inspected x 100
Color defect = 3

Determine the percentage of grapes that don't meet the minimum diameter for berries.

Size defect = 45 bunches / 500 bunches inspected x 100
Size defect = 9

Determine the percentage of grapes with serious defects.

Serious defects = 12 / 500 x 100
Serious defects = 2.4

All 3 results are less than the permitted levels of decay and damage, so the order meets the grade standards.

Produce graders do a lot of work with percentages. Accuracy is very important.

"A 5 percent error on inspection results could cost someone a lot of money. Someone is going to lose money, so the results better be accurate, or the wrong person could be getting an invoice clipped," says Honey.
