You are the chief information officer at a university. The university has decided, as part of its business strategy, to introduce more distance and continuing education courses. These programs are run over the Internet.

As the continuing education department grows, you keep implementing technology to help it run more smoothly.

"This morning, we've been having problems with long-distance communications on the campus," says Janice Sissons. She is a director of information technology.

You direct the technology department on how to fix the problem as quickly as possible. But after three hours, the problem still hasn't been resolved. This is going to affect students' ability to access their education courses, use the Internet and make long-distance calls. It will also make it difficult for faculty to conduct their research.

The technicians tell you that there is a slim possibility that the lines could be fixed in a few hours.
