Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You sound the alarm so that students and faculty are aware of the problem.

This is the real-life decision of Janice Sisson. She is a director of information technology.

"You have to recognize the impact of the problem on students and people working at the university," she says. "In this case, it's a big problem, and we made the decision to send out the alarm."

She says that if the information technologists had solved the problem quickly, there may have been no need to involve the general public. But as time passed, and the problem became greater, it was important for computer and long-distance users to know that the CIO was trying to fix the problem.

"This is something that affects the day-to-day activities on campus. We have to let people know what is going on," she says.
