English as a Second Language Teacher

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Decision Making

As an English as a second language (ESL) teacher, you will see all sorts of students from different countries with different cultures.

You are teaching an ESL class at a private, international school. Your class consists of 10 young adult students: three from Korea, four from Saudi Arabia, and one each from Brazil, China and Russia. You begin a class discussion about food, and what students like to eat. The discussion begins well and most of the students get a chance to talk.

While you are talking with your Chinese and Russian students about similarities between perogies and dim sum dumplings, voices erupt on the other side of the room. You hear one student insult another student's culture because they eat something different.

What do you do?
