Numbers are at the heart of the work as a collection clerk. You need people skills, but according to collector Kecia Kesler, "the ability to interpret numbers, percentages and graphs" is also important.

"Math is used when you figure out interest and if you are paid by commission, what the rate will be, and whether it is added to the debt or taken from the debt," says collector Michelle Dunn.

You just got off the phone with a woman who owes $700 to her former dentist. She's agreed to pay $15 per month until the debt is paid. Interest on the debt is calculated at a rate of 12.75 percent per year.

How long will it take her to pay it off? And how much will she pay in total?
