Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You continue your efforts to get the account paid voluntarily.

This is the real-life decision made by collector Michelle Dunn. "If I have a swearing customer on the phone, I listen and let them finish, then try to calm them down or call them back later."

Being a collection clerk isn't about getting revenge or making a debtor feel worse than they probably already do. If you can diffuse an angry situation and turn it around, you've got the makings of a good collection career.

That doesn't mean that you wouldn't ever call the police or send an account to court. "I try to wait a while and do some other work, then go back and look at the account and make sure that such drastic action must taken. Once I am confident that there is no other way, then I feel better about doing it."
