Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a backhoe operator digging a trench in an urban area. The arm of the machine extends 15 feet. You have 60 feet to dig. How many times will you have to move your machine, once you have dug the first 15 feet?

You have dug the first 15 feet:

60 - 15 = 45 feet

You have 45 feet remaining to dig.

45 feet / 15 feet = 3

You will have to move the backhoe 3 more times to dig the entire length of the trench. That is, you will move it once and dig to 30 feet, you will move it again to dig to 45 feet and move it a third time to dig the final 60 feet.
